 Greetings!

The Program for Interdisciplinary Environmental Research (PIER) is soliciting applications for trainees to begin in Summer 2024.

If you're not familiar with PIER, it is the Program for Interdisciplinary Environmental Research and has been an official UC San Diego PhD specialization since 2016. PIER's core purpose is to nurture and support a collaborative and interdisciplinary research culture that advances the frontiers of knowledge, with a particular focus on understanding and protecting the planet.

A complete PIER application package, including PIER essay and advisor letter, is due January 31, 2024.

The candidate's PIER application package should include:

  • A PIER essay expressing an interest in interdisciplinary training and research which states how the training would benefit their current research and/or career goals.
  • A supporting faculty advisor's letter acknowledging the student's academic ability, interdisciplinary environmental interest, and the availability of summer stipend support for the candidate.

If candidates or supporting faculty have any questions regarding PIER you may contact Biology faculty member: Dr. Jon Shurin, jsh...@ucsd.edu.

Student Info Sessions, including opportunity for Q&A will be held next week:

Wednesday January 10 @10-11am on Zoom - https://ucsd.zoom.us/j/91279057120

Thursday January 11 @ 9-10am on Zoom - https://ucsd.zoom.us/j/91279057120

Graduate Coordinators and curious faculty are also welcome to join as well!
