Introducing Valeria Spall and Advising Services Updates

Dear Biology PhD Students,
We hope that Fall Quarter is off to a great start. The Student & Instructional Services team is pleased to announce that Valeria Spall has joined Melody Bazyar as a PhD Program Coordinator in the School of Biological Sciences.
Valeria comes to UC San Diego from the Department of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley, where she gained extensive experience with curriculum planning, events organizing, faculty recruitment, and student advising. Many incoming students had the opportunity to meet Valeria during the recent Grad Launch I activities, and Valeria looks forward to meeting more students through advising.
In response to student feedback and with the additional staff, the following advising resources have been added or augmented. Please take a moment to review the information below, also available on the Advising web page:
Email Digest: Students can find information about academic requirements and other opportunities and announcements that have also been sent via email by visiting the PhD Student Email Digest.
Please note that there are two tabs on the top right of the main digest page that can be toggled to show information pertaining to academic requirements and that related to other opportunities and announcements.
Advising Services:
- Virtual Advising Center (VAC) - Students can submit questions to staff advisors through the VAC. Questions submitted through the VAC will be addressed within 1-3 business days by one of the PhD Coordinators. Responses to questions can be viewed in the Contact Record area. The Virtual Advising Center affords students the most timely access to advising answers. It also automatically maintains a record of previously submitted questions and answers, providing access to a comprehensive record of responses.
- Email - Questions that would benefit from input from the thesis advisor and/or the fiscal unit can still be submitted via @ucsd email to mba...@ucsd.edu and vsp...@ucsd.edu.
- Appointments - 30 minute appointments can be reserved via Calendly:
- Advising Calendar - Drop-in (online) and Walk-in (in-person) advising options are listed, along with the Office Hours of the Chair and Vice Chair of the Graduate Committee. Please refer to the advising calendar for availability.
