This opportunity would be particularly beneficial for acting and improv students who may want to explore a law degree, or any job or role that requires public speaking or presentation, and anyone with an interest in gaining insight into real courtroom drama (I know from personal experience as a jury member in a long trial that there can be a lot of theater in a courtroom!).

Hi Theater Arts Slugs!

We are excited to announce that Mock Trial at UCSC is hosting interest meetings THIS WEEK, on September 25 and 26 from 5-6 PM in McHenry 2353 – where you can learn more about mock trial, the tryout process, and meet current members of the team – and fall tryouts next Friday–Sunday, October 3, 4 and 5! 

Our program offers a unique opportunity to sharpen performance and public speaking skills in a courtroom setting. Students can practice quick thinking, persuasive delivery, and character work all in front of live judges and juries.

Mock Trial is especially beneficial for Theater majors interested in serving as witnesses. Witnesses portray characters on the stand, blending storytelling with improvisation. You’ll be challenged to develop a persona, memorize a script, and then adapt in real time when faced with unpredictable cross-examinations. Many of our most successful witnesses come from Theater backgrounds because they excel at embodying roles and performing under pressure.

The Mock Trial team at UCSC is a competitive program that travels throughout California to compete against some of the best teams in the country. We have 3 different teams that offer various levels of competitiveness and time commitment to ensure that all students are able to participate, regardless of experience or class schedule. 

The purpose of The Mock Trial program at UCSC is designed to help prepare students for law school and beyond by working on a variety of skills including writing and public speaking. Typically, we go to 5-7 tournaments every year including Regionals in February. 

We encourage all students regardless of class year or major to try out for our team. There is no previous experience needed to join the team. The tryout packet, tryout sign up schedule, and additional information can all be found on our website: Mock Trial at UCSC Website
