Dear all,

Last summer, while driving through small villages in Transylvania, I passed a U.S. Marine jogging along the main road. I was stunned. What was the American military doing in the middle of nowhere? Whose freedom was being defended there — and from whom?

This Spring, I invite you to think through questions like these in HISC 189: Neither East nor Europe: A Political History (Mon/Wed 5:20–6:55 pm). The course fulfills the Textual Analysis (TA) GE requirement and is open to all majors.

We’ll examine Eastern Europe not as a distant or “backward” region, but as a political concept shaped by empire, nationalism, socialism, war, and neoliberal transformation. Why is the region constantly described as “in transition”? Who decides what counts as democracy? Do empires ever really disappear, or just reorganize?

If you’re interested in borders, nationalism, race, political belonging, or the future of democracy, this course may be for you. And yes, we will also talk about Balkan music and vampire myths!

Feel free to reach out with questions at sco...@ucsc.edu. I hope to see you in the spring.

All the best,
Stefania
