We are delighted and honored that the Journal of Modern Greek Studies (JMGS), the official scholarly publication of the MGSA, was awarded by the Ministry of Culture Literary Awards committee a 2025 Greek State Literary Prize of "Honorary Distinction" for its "contribution to the dissemination of modern Greek studies internationally."

Next Wednesday, 3 June, 2026, at 7:30 p.m., the journal's current Editor-in-Chief, Professor Artemis Leontis, will attend the official award ceremony for the Hellenic Republic's State Literary Awards, to take place in the amphitheater of the National Gallery in Athens [η Τελετή Aπονομής των Κρατικών Λογοτεχνικών Βραβείων 2025 και των Τιμητικών Διακρίσεων σε Περιοδικά, ορίσθηκε να πραγματοποιηθεί την Τετάρτη 3 Ιουνίου 2026, στις 19:00, στο αμφιθέατρο της Εθνικής Πινακοθήκης στην Αθήνα.]

It is very fitting that our current Editor-in-Chief, Artemis Leontis, will be the one to receive this honor on behalf of the MGSA. Professor Leontis is a highly experienced editor having served as Editor of Arts & Humanities for the JMGS from 2013-2016 and reelected until 2019. Before that, she served for many years on the Editorial Board, and as Associate Editor. In 2024, she assumed the position of Editor-in Chief of the JMGS, a position that she holds down to the present. Under her leadership, the JMGS has enhanced its offerings and gone from strength to strength. Her service to the profession and particularly to the MGSA is significant as she has continuously served since 1994 as either a member or chair of almost every MGSA committee.

Professor Leontis is one of a long line of internationally recognized scholars who have held this position over the years and who, in collaboration with the associate editors and book review editors, have upheld the consistently high editorial standards of this "magnificent scholarly journal" (Choice Magazine).

Congratulations to all the current editorial team and to past editors—some of whom, regretfully, are no longer with us.

In preparation for next week's event, Professor Leontis has shared the following description of our journal with the event organizers as well as the general public:

The Journal of Modern Greek Studies (JMGS), the official scholarly publication of the Modern Greek Studies Association (Εταιρεία Νεοελληνικών Σπουδών, MGSA), is one of the most reputable interdisciplinary publications in the field. It is published by Johns Hopkins University Press and focuses on the study of Greece, Cyprus, and the Greek diaspora, spanning from the late Byzantine period to the present.

The journal, now entering its 44th year of publication, is issued biannually. It is multidisciplinary and covers anthropology, ethnomusicology, history, art history, literary and cultural studies, media and film studies, political science, and sociology. It publishes articles, research notes, and book reviews. It promotes the integration of Modern Greek Studies into broader comparative frameworks. The journal publishes occasional Special Sections devoted to a particular topic, such as "Women and Men in Greece: A Society in Transition" in its first issue (May 1983) and "Unacknowledged Labor: The Work and Lives of Greek American Women" in a very recent issue (October 2025). Submitted articles undergo a double-blind peer review process. The audience is academics, specialists in Greek studies, and other readers well-versed in the field.

The current Editor-in-Chief is Artemis Leontis, one of the internationally recognized scholars who have held this position over the years and who, in collaboration with the associate editors and book review editors, have upheld the consistently high editorial standards of the journal.

Το Journal of Modern Greek Studies (JMGS),
