Dear list members,

I am pleased to announce the publication of my new monograph:

Athens Demapped: Archaeology, Heritage, and Urban Transformation
(Coimbra University Press, IUC Monographs, 2025)
ISBN: 978-989-26-2771-7
DOI: 10.14195/978-989-26-2771-7

In Athens Demapped, I explore the contested relationships among classical
heritage, urban planning, tourism, and politics in contemporary Athens.
The central argument is that the city has been “demapped” in various ways:
certain communities, histories, and spatial narratives are overwritten or
marginalized in favor of dominant heritage imaginaries. Rather than seeing
Athens as a static “classical” monument, the book treats it as a dynamic,
contested urban palimpsest.

Key themes include:

* The politics of archaeological visibility and erasure
* The commodification of the classical as a tool of urban branding
* The role of nostalgia, gentrification, and dissenting spatial imaginaries
* Questions of memory, belonging, and justice in heritage practice

I believe this work might be of interest to scholars working at the
intersection of archaeology, heritage studies, urbanism, and classical
reception.

The book is available for download from the publisher’s catalogue (Open
Access): https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://monographs.uc.pt/iuc/catalog/book/539__;!!CzAuKJ42GuquVTTmVmPViYEvSg!JQddXNvMij43NfHI_JlMN9DjS-5ZT7W69TX__V_nWisboNAhoY531vHcztRZs7z50Bg9gProOlfGe8D_izDLhg$

Thank you for your interest, and I hope you find my ideas stimulating and
useful.

Warm regards,
Dimitris Plantzos
