Dear colleagues,
I am delighted to announce the publication of my new book, The Exile and the Sultan: Nikolas Kefalas and His Maritime Reform Proposal to Mahmud II.
The book examines the remarkable life of Nikolas Kefalas (1763–1847), a Greek sailor, cartographer, merchant, pirate, writer, and reformer who crossed imperial and maritime frontiers in the turbulent Mediterranean world of the Age of Revolutions. Drawing on
documents scattered across multiple archives, I reconstruct Kefalas’s extraordinary career across the Ionian Islands, Istanbul, Indian Ocean, and beyond.
The volume also includes the full transliteration and English translation of a treatise Kefalas composed after the Greek Revolution and presented to Sultan Mahmud II in 1830, offering a rare first-person reform proposal addressed directly to the Ottoman center.
The book is available through online platforms and bookstores in Turkey. For purchases outside of Turkey, please contact the publishing house.
With best regards,
Yusuf Ziya Karabıçak
