Dear MGSA members & friends,

At its recent meeting, our Executive Board approved an increase in the monetary value of all the academic prizes that the Association sponsors and traditionally celebrates at its biennial symposium. This decision reaffirms our deep commitment to excellence in our academic field of Modern Greek Studies at all levels.

The changes listed below will take immediate effect and will apply to the prize competitions currently underway. They are as follows:

The Edmund Keeley Prize awarded to an academic book dealing with modern Greece or a Hellenic theme published originally in English will carry a prize of $2,000 and a one-year MGSA membership.

The Elizabeth Constantinides Translation Prize for original translations into English of a literary work published in Modern Greek will carry a prize of $1,000.

The Vasiliki Karagiannaki for the Best Edited Volume in the field of Modern Greek Studies will carry a prize of $1,000.

The John O. Iatrides Prize for the Best English-language Dissertation in the field of Modern Greek Studies in North America will carry a prize of $2,000; one year membership in the MGSA; and $500 toward travel expenses to attend the MGSA Symposium.

The S. Victor Papacosma Essay Prize for the Best Graduate Essay on a Modern Greek subject will carry a $500 award & reimbursement to the prizewinner for expenses (up to $500 for travel and accommodations in addition to any financial aid offered to graduate students participating in our MGSA Symposium). The winner will also be given a free one-year membership or renewal of membership.

Please consider submitting your work to these MGSA prize competitions. Faculty members should submit their monographs and edited works. And, in some categories, encourage your students to submit their translations, completed dissertations, and first rate graduate essays

We welcome new members to the MGSA even as we remind longtime members to renew their membership so, together, we can continue to support scholarly work on Greece, Cyprus and the diaspora.

On behalf of the MGSA Executive Committee,
Vangelis
