Dear friends and colleagues,
as most of you would know, Dionysis Savvopoulos, Greece's foremost singer-songwriter, died in Athens on Tuesday, after a long illness.
His funeral today was another occasion to show the deep, affective bonds different generations of Greeks had with him. I single out Alkinoos Ioannidis'
beautiful and moving tribute. Among other things, he explained what my generation saw in Savvopoulos, as well as the different ways we approached his work: often in disagreement with its politics, but always in awe of its creative genius
and analytical acumen.
On this day of farewells, our Greek Studies Now blog is republishing a short piece I wrote as introduction to the recent translation of Savvopoulos's lyrics into English by David Connolly, complete with helpful links to songs and videos.
