Publishing in Modern Greek Studies

2 June 2026

Royal Holloway University of London, Bedford Square Building, London

Applications are invited for a one-day workshop on publishing in Modern Greek Studies. The workshop is intended for doctoral students and early-career researchers in the humanities and social sciences working in Modern Greek Studies and/or adjacent fields, including Ottoman, Balkan, and Mediterranean Studies.

The workshop has two main aims. First, to familiarise the next generation of researchers with this growing field, including current publication trends and principal publication venues in the UK, Europe and the United States (peer-reviewed journals, edited series, and academic presses). Second, to offer concrete advice and expert guidance on publishing work on Modern Greek topics in peer-reviewed journals beyond the field, thereby helping early career scholars increase the visibility and impact of their research. Two further sessions will introduce participants to the complexities of the editorial process (from article submission to publication, with an emphasis on the opportunities and challenges of AI) and to the process of turning a doctoral dissertation into a book. The workshop will also include an extended hands-on session on writing an article abstract and a book proposal.

Confirmed session leaders include Professor Artemis Leontis (University of Michigan; Editor of the Journal of Modern Greek Studies and Series Editor of Greek/Modern Intersections, University of Michigan Press), Professor Emeritus David Ricks (King’s College London; former Editor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies), Dr Nikolaos Papadogiannis (University of Sterling; Editor of Contemporary European History), Associate Professor Athena Leoussi (University of Reading; Editor of Genealogy), and Stephanie Ireland (Senior Editor for History, Berghahn Books).

The workshop will take place at Royal Holloway University of London, Bedford Square Building, London, on 2 June 2026, 11 am to 5 pm. It is co-organised by the Society for Modern Greek Studies (UK), the Centre for Greek Diaspora Studies at Royal Holloway University of London, and the journal Genealogy.

We welcome doctoral candidates and early career researchers from the Humanities and Social Sciences working in the field of Modern Greek Studies, including the Greek Diaspora and minorities in Greece. Researchers in adjacent fields -such as Modern Ottoman, Balkan and Mediterranean Studies- whose research engages with the Greek world are also welcome to apply. Participation is free of charge. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Places are limited, so please apply early.

Please apply by 20 May via the online form below. Successful applicants will be notified by 24 May.
