to Classical Greek and Latin Discussion Group

The Swedish, Finnish, Netherlands, Norwegian, and Danish Institutes in Athens have put together three panel discussions on Democracy and its tribulations, this Tuesday and Wednesday, 28-29 April 2026.
I've been asked to moderate the ancient panel Wednesday at 9:45 am, and the estimable George Kalpadakis will moderate the other two panels. Please come armed with pointed questions aimed at forcing us to say publicly the things we think privately.
An enormous number of words have been generated on the subject of democracy. The inspiring (and occasionally creepy?) thing about history is that our information environment, and with it our understanding of the past, changes so quickly and dramatically that yesterday's Athenian democracy of 403 BCE will not be the same as next Wednesday's. Whatever you hear from us, ideally live but also via Zoom, will be fresh and new, in spite of as well as thanks to our diverse and highly qualified speakers.
