Dear MGSA members,
I am thrilled to share that the first Greek newspaper in America, thought to have been long lost, was discovered in the Harvard Divinity School (HDS) Special Collections. This rare find was part of the Andover Theological Seminary collection, which had been on deposit with HDS since 1926 and was only recently cataloged through a special project.
This exciting news was shared on Wednesday, June 5th at the Consulate of Greece in Boston honoring the life and work of Professor Manolis “Manny” Paraschos: https://www.instagram.com/p/C76j1btRDZy/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D
The references to Neos Kosmos that I have located indicate that Constantine D. Phassoularides published Neos Kosmos in Boston in 1892. However, this appears to be the first issue which was published in 1893. Ετος Α’, Aριθ. 1, ΒΟΣΤΩΝΗ ΠΑΡΑΣΚΕΥΗ 19(3) ΜΑΡΤΙΟΥ 1893. Perhaps Phassoularides published a single-issue in 1892 and then it took about a year to establish the newspaper?
All three issues have been digitized and are open to all! https://tinyurl.com/mryxnr7a
Kind regards,
Rhea
