Hi Walter,
We generally discourage posting an incomplete error message without any context. It will help if you state what you are running & the code verisons etc:
  • WRF-Hydro in standalone mode
  • WRF-Hydro in standalone mode but using forcings from WRF (wrfout* files)
  • WRF-Hydro coupled to WRF
  • Running just WRF - oops! wrong forum please see https://forum.mmm.ucar.edu/phpBB3/
  • Specific Preprocessing tool
  • Specific Postprocessing tool
I do see that you are using 5.0.3 and something called Virtual Box.
Has anyone else run WRF-Hydro Using Virtual Box?

Best regards,
Molly

Hey Molly

I am running WRF-Hydro in standalone mod.

Its my first time with the model and I am following the steps outlined in the "HowToBuildandRunWRF-HydroV5inStandaloneMode" document.

I am working on a VM using OracleVM VirtualBox Manager

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Walter,

I'm guessing this is an issue with the filesystem.  Are you trying to build the model in a shared space with Windows or on a case insensitive filesystem?  Unfortunately we don't currently support this.

If you have follow on / more questions related to model builds it would also be useful to know what linux distribution, compilers, and MPI implementation you're using.

Best,
Katelyn

Hi Katelyn

Thanks for your response.

Here are some of the details

OS - Linux 2.6
Compilers - Linux gfort compiler dmpar
MPI implementation - version 3.3.2

If this is a filesystem issue. What should be done ? I am fairly new to working with Linux.

Hey

I suppose it was something to do with the MPICH version. Started from scratch again and used the right version.

Great to hear, Walter.

Best of luck with the rest of your simulations.

Cheers,
Molly

Glad to hear!

We sometimes see problems when folks try to build in shared spaces / mounts to case insensitive filesystems (related issue on GitHub).  If you're building within the Linux VM filespace it shouldn't be an issue.

Hey Molly

So I had earlier set up the WRF Hydro model on a virtual machine and ran the test-case provided on the website. It worked !!

Later, I moved on to building WRF Hydro on a cluster. I've been using the "How To Build & Run WRF-Hydro V5.1.1 in Standalone Mode" document provided and have been able to go through the first few steps of building WRF ARW, WPS, createwrfinput, the preprocessing toolbox and regridding the forcing data. I am stuck once again this time with buidling WRF Hydro on the cluster.

I have installed and built the libraries related to MPICH, NETCDF - C and NETCDF Fortran locally. Exported the paths as well. When I go through to the ./compileNoahMP.sh setEnvar.sh step, I end up getting errors related to the MPP and Data_Rec folders. I have shared the terminal output here in a word document. Been trying to figure out where I've gone wrong for the past few days now. Will be glad to hear your opinion.

Hi Walter,

You might want to check your netCDF installs (e.g. nf-config --all and nc-config --all) to make sure you have netCDF4 features enabled.

Also, if you're installing on a cluster, it's likely that some compatible MPI libraries are already installed and potentially the netCDF4 libraries as well.  I'd check with your system administrator.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Katelyn

Thanks Katelyn. I built the netCDF libraries once again and this time when I compiled with the NoahMP options, make was successful. But the MPP and Data_Rec folders weren't accessible (this showed up in the messages when compiled).

Glad to hear.

If these are warnings in the build log, you should be fine, but let us know if there's an error.
