Hi everyone,

In WRF-Hydro uncoupled mode, I can calibrate several parameters, including those from the NoahMP scheme, by enabling:

Soil_properties: Spatially distributed parameters for NoahMP: 0=Off, 1=On

If I run WRF-Hydro in coupled mode with WRF, do I lose the ability to calibrate these parameters, or only some of them?

Also, how can I apply the calibrations performed in uncoupled mode when switching to coupled mode? Is there a recommended procedure to transfer these values correctly?

I appreciate any insights.

Best regards.

Hi Juan Carlos:
Unfortunately I do not think WRF supports the spatially distributed parameters. We added this capability to Noah-MP for WRF-Hydro offline applications, but I don't think the WRF system can use it (at least without code changes). So the WRF-Hydro routing module distributed parameters (in Fulldom.nc and in hydro2dtbl.nc) will be used when coupled to WRF, but the soil_properties.nc Noah-MP file will not be used when coupled to WRF and you are limited to the TBL files.

I'm not sure what the lift would be to get this supported on the WRF side, but worth a request to that team. I know NASA was able to add it to LIS for our WRF-Hydro coupling applications, and more models are now moving to these spatially distributed capability.

Thanks!
Aubrey
