Hello,

I have simulated the streamflow of the McLeod basin in Alberta, Canada, using the WRF-Hydro model over a 20-year period. For the calibration period, I used from 2000 to 2010, and for validation, I used from 2011 to 2019.

The calibration process involved 177 iterations to optimize the objective function of the PyWrfhydrocalibration tool. However, in both the calibration and validation hydrographs, the peak flow occurs one month earlier than observed. The model was forced using GLDAS data with a 25 km resolution.

I have attached the calibration and validation hydrographs. If anyone has encountered a similar issue or has insights into this error, your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Shanaka

Dear Shanka

I had the same problem in snow dominated basin.

I am wondering if you calibrated the land surface model physics parameters in the model or not.

It worked for me.

Hi,

Unfortunately, WRF-Hydro will not give you accurate results in snow dominated areas. You'd better use WRF-Hydro/Glacier, you will see an improvement for sure.

Hello Shafaqat

How we can download WRF/Glacier?

Could you please share it here in the group, I read your paper but couldn’t find the version of glacier anywhere for download.

Best regards

please check the following link.

You can download and compile on your machine.

Snow-dominant watersheds are different than glacier-fed watersheds. I am wondering why the WRF-Hydro fails over snow-dominant watersheds without glaciers.
McLeod River Basin is in a cold region with a considerable amount of seasonal snowpack that starts melting in early April. There are no glaciers in the watershed.

Thanks
Siraj

Hello

In case your watershed is snow dominant I suggest looking this work.

Impact of land surface model schemes in snow-dominated arid and semiarid watersheds using the WRF-hydro modeling systems

Hello Shafqat,

Thank you for suggesting the WRF-Hydro/Glacier model for the glacier-dominated basin. However, when I compiled the model, it gave an error, which did not occur when I compiled the standard WRF-Hydro version (5.2.0). I have attached a snapshot of the error for your review. If you have any insights into this issue, your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Shanaka
