Hi everyone,

I have encountered an issue with the output of the WRF-Hydro model. I am trying to obtain outputs for a flood event on a specific date. I have installed and run version 5.2 of the model. Initially, I generated outputs from the WRF model for the desired date, and then I ran the WRF-Hydro model with the default settings. The problem is that when I open the file frxst_pts_out.txt, the values are nearly zero.

Additionally, I attempted to modify the number of stream order in the CHANPARM.tbl file to include 5 stream order. However, when I made these changes, the model produced errors. Is it not possible to modify this file, or do such changes require adherence to a specific format?

I would greatly appreciate your guidance on these issues.

Best regards,
Parisa

Hi Parisa,

Thank you for sharing your setup, that actually helps a lot to see what combinations you are using! A few things that might help you.

1- If you want to see whether you see a response given the setup you have, I suggest you run with the forcing option 4, which drops 1 inch of rainfall and you probably could see some response to the event in the short term.

2- According to your namelist options, right now you are doing a cold start and not using any restart files, that means the initial condition of the model is off and the simulations are not reliable. For example, if the soil is dry, all the precipitation could infiltrate and you do not see any response in the streamflow. So, I would recommend you run the model for some time before starting to look into results. Having near zero values is very possible if there is no warm start. Check out this doc: https://ral.ucar.edu/sites/default/files/public/Using%20Restart%20Files%20in%20WRF-Hydro%20Simulations_1.pdf for explaining the options related to this.

3- Regarding your question related to the CHANPAR.TBL, you do not need to modify this file. I see that you have only up to 5 order streams, so you are good with the default file and no need to change it.

4- Another thing that I noticed in your hydro.namelist, you have the channel_option = 3 that means you are using the gridded routing option and therefore the Fuldom.nc file is used. The Routelink file in this case is not required and will not have any impact on your simulations. I thought I would let you know about that.

5- Also the following seems odd to me, I would just uncomment the following and set the rst_dt to -9999, if you do not want to output the file frequently.

! Specify the restart file write frequency...(minutes)
! A value of -99999 will output restarts on the first day of the month only.
!rst_dt = 120

! Reset the LSM soil states from the high-res routing restart file (1=overwrite, 0=no overwrite)
! NOTE: Only turn this option on if overland or subsurface routing is active!
!rst_typ = 1

Thank you!
Arezoo
