Hi Fructueux Ehouinsou,

I can help you with creating the LDASIN forcing files for your domain using IMERG (as supplemental precipitation files) and ERA5-Land (as meteorological forcing files). I can download sample IMERG data and ERA5-Land data but in order to make sure that I develop the right scripts for your case I am wondering if you could send me one day or a few day's IMERG and ERA5-Land data files that you use? You will need to send me the geo_em file for your domain as well.

Thanks,
Yongxin

My name is *Fructueux Ehouinsou*, I am a Master’s student working on
land–surface and hydrological modeling, and as part of my research work, I
am implementing WRF-Hydro (standalone) over my study basin. I am reaching
out for support regarding two important components of my WRF-Hydro
standalone setup using the Noah LSM.

*1. Generation of LDASIN Atmospheric Forcing Files*

I am currently building LDASIN forcings from:

- *IMERG* (30-min precipitation)
- *ERA5-Land* (hourly meteorological variables)

However, I am facing challenges with:

- correctly reprojecting IMERG/ERA5-Land to my model grid (projection
from wrfinput_d01, Mercator)
- ensuring full CF compliance (grid_mapping, scale_factor,
esri_pe_string, etc.)
- constructing fully valid LDASIN files (variable types/units, time &
reference_time dimensions, RAINRATE generation)

I would appreciate guidance on:
→ recommended scripts, workflows, or examples for producing LDASIN
forcings from IMERG + ERA5-Land datasets or other multiple data sources.

*2. Configuration of Hydrologic Nudging*

I also plan to activate discharge nudging for automatic calibration, but I
am unsure how to:

- correctly build the *nudgingParams.nc* file for my domain
- generate the required NetCDF *time-slice observation files* from *daily
discharge data*
- handle the temporal mismatch (daily observations → hourly model
timestep)
- map streamflow gauge stations to the correct *LINKID* entries in
RouteLink.nc

Any working examples (nudgingParams.nc, time-slice files, recommended
workflow) would be extremely helpful.

Thank you very much for your support.
I can provide any required files (wrfinput, geo_em.dxx , RouteLink,
generated LDASIN, etc.) if needed.

Kind regards,

Hello Yongxin Zhang,

Thank you very much for your willingness to help.

As requested, I am sharing the data files upon 2 days I am currently using for my WRF-Hydro standalone setup:

  • IMERG precipitation data → global coverage, downloaded at 30-min resolution.

  • ERA5-Land meteorological data → downloaded monthly, with hourly temporal resolution.

  • geo_em.d01.nc → the geogrid file for my domain.

  • wrfinput_d01 → the initialization file used for Noah LSM.

Please let me know if you need more details about my processing workflow.

Thanks again for your support.

Best regards,

Dear Dr. Yongxin Zhang,

I hope you are doing well.

I would like to kindly ask if you were able to finish working with the input data provided by Fructueux Ehouinsou for the creation of the LDASIN forcing files using IMERG and ERA5-Land.

If possible, I would be very grateful if you could share the scripts or workflow that you developed for that case, as they would be extremely helpful for my own WRF-Hydro standalone configuration.

Thank you very much for your time and support.

Best regards,
Juan Carlos Tufino

Dear Juan Carlos Tufino,

I am working on developing the scripts and workflow for Fructueux Ehouinsou for the generation of the LDASIN forcing files based on IMERG and ERA5-Land. I am hoping to have this completed within the next few days and will send the package to you and Fructueux Ehouinsou once it is done.

Thanks,
Yongxin

Dear, Dr. Zhang

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Connecticut and relatively new to running WRF-Hydro. I have also been working on generating LDASIN files using the ERA5-Land dataset and the officially provided MFE tool, but I keep encountering errors. If possible, could you please also share a script or workflow for processing ERA5-Land for me? My precipitation data also comes from ERA5-Land.
Thank you very much for your help and support!

Best,
Liang

Hi Liang,

The current version of the Python-based MFE does not have the capability to process the ERA5-Land dataset. We will add this capability later on. For now, I am still working on the scripts and workflow to process the ERA5-Land dataset and I will also send the scripts to you after they are done. With these scripts, the LDASIN forcings including precipitation based on ERA5-Land will be created. The IMERG-based precipitation forcings will be created as supplemental precipitation and in your case you will just use the ERA5-Land based precipitation instead of the IMERG-based precipitation.

Thanks,
Yongxin

Dear Users,

I hope this message finds you well.

I have recently installed the *WRF-Hydro Standalone version 5.4.0*
successfully and completed the test case over the *Croton, New York*
domain, following the instructions provided in the official test case
documentation and user manual. The model ran successfully without errors.

However, after running the test case, I was unable to locate the *surface
runoff* variable in any of the output files. To further analyze the
outputs, I attempted to use *Python* for reading and visualizing the data.
During this process, I encountered some challenges, such as:

-

Converting UTM coordinates to geographic coordinates,
-

Plotting inundation maps and other variables properly.

I would appreciate your support with the following questions:

1.

How can I obtain the *surface runoff* variable? Is there a specific
option in the namelist or another relevant output variable that represents
it?
2.

Are there any *free tools or plugins* (e.g., for *ArcGIS*, *QGIS*, or
*Python*) recommended for working with WRF-Hydro 5.4.0 output data?
3.

Is there a *comprehensive user manual or guide* for the *Standalone
WRF-Hydro model*, similar to what is available for WRF atmospheric
modeling?

Additionally, could you kindly let me know:

-

Is there a standard procedure or tool for *post-processing and
visualization* of WRF-Hydro output data?
-

Are there any recommended tutorials or example workflows for *Python-based
analysis* of WRF-Hydro results?

Thank you in advance for your guidance and support.

Regards,

MSV
