Hi everyone,

I am working with WRF-Chem v4.5 and trying to include biomass burning emissions using FINNv2.5.1.

My goal is to generate/compile yearly FINN emissions data (for a specific year) so that I can use it in WRF-Chem through the fire_emis preprocessor.

I am a bit confused about the workflow:

  • How can I compile or generate yearly FINNv2.5.1 emissions data?

  • Do I need to run the FINN preprocessor (MODIS/VIIRS based), or is there a way to directly download yearly FINN emission files?

  • What format should the FINN input file be for fire_emis?

Any guidance or example workflow would be really helpful.

Thanks!
Sakshi

Dear Sakshi,

you can actually download directly from https://www.acom.ucar.edu/Data/fire/

It will be in Mozart and Saprc99 format. u can download finn data separately for each year.
then you can use fire_emis preprocessor to generate wrffirechemi files.

Thankyou for replying, but i need the data for year 2024 and for FINN 2.5.1 version.

Hello Gabriele,

Would you be able to inform me whether these data are available elsewhere? Unfortunately, the period of highest intensity in South America (September 9–16) was not covered.

Hello Douglas

there have been some issues with the satellite data during that time period and we have not yet had the time to look into it. So for now you might have to use FINNv1.5 for these days. Or you could do a comparison between the different FINN versions for days when you have data for both and derive a scaling factor that you then apply to FINNV1 for the missing days. This would ensure more consistency in your fire emissions.
