University Recruitment

Annual hiring campaign for new and soon-to-be economics and finance graduates.

Our Recruitment team will continue to host virtual information sessions for several university Career Centres across Canada. Students can then consult their Career Centre to learn about the opportunities available at the Bank.

Important note: The Research Assistant job opportunity will be reposted on our website from January 18 to 31. Candidates who applied in the Fall will not have to reapply as applications are kept for one year.

More information about this process can be found on the Bank’s Careers page.

Summer Student Work Placement

Full-time work opportunities from May to late August in various fields.

The application process for full-time summer positions at the Bank opens from January 18 to 31.  The Bank recruits students from a wide range of disciplines and programs to work from May to late August. Students who are returning to school in 2021-22 are eligible to apply; they can consult our website for available opportunities.

Undergraduate Research Poster Session

Showcasing high-quality economics research by undergraduate students

The poster session will be held at the 55th Annual Conference of the Canadian Economics Association in June. Current undergraduate students, or those who have graduated in the past year but have not yet begun their graduate studies, are encouraged to apply to participate. High-quality original research papers, in either French or English, focusing on any area of Economics will be considered.

To submit your research and for more information, visit the Canadian Economics Association’s website.

Graduate Student Paper Award

Recognizing high-quality research by promising graduate students in Economics and Finance.

A one-day workshop was hosted at the Bank of Canada in September, where finalists presented their work to Bank researchers and policy-makers.

The $2,500 first-place award was presented to Jasmine Hao from the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver School of Economics. Jasmine’s paper, “Building Up Trust in a Dynamic Game: A Study on Collusive Price-Fixing in the Chilean Pharmaceutical Retail Industry”, discusses firms’ coordination issues when initiating collusion.

Eric Richert, from Queen’s University, was named runner-up and received a $1,000 bursary for his paper entitled “Approximate Solution of Equilibrium Outcome Distributions”.

More information about the Graduate Student Paper Award and the application process is available on the Bank’s website.

Governor’s Challenge

A university competition for undergraduate students that simulates the monetary policy decision-making process.

Twenty-two teams from universities coast to coast participated in the first round of the Governor’s Challenge last November. They each presented their analysis and monetary policy recommendation to a panel of expert Bank of Canada judges, and were evaluated on specific criteria.

Congratulations to the following top five teams! They will move on to the final round of the competition, which will be held virtually on February 13:

  • Carleton University, coached by Raul Razo-Garcia
  • University of Alberta, coached by Malik Shukayev
  • University of Ottawa, coached by Lilia Karnizova
  • University of Toronto (St. George Campus), coached by Martin Burda and Angelo Melino
  • Wilfrid Laurier University, coached by Wing Chan
