Hello,

My name is Mathieu and I live in Laval, Québec. I joined TSA two years
ago. My interests are broad and include all families of "freshwater"
turtles. I hope this group will become a great place for sharing
information about turtle conservation.

I'm wondering if scientists know where Cuora zhoui is found? Is there
any proven locality or just speculation based on trade specimens and
trade routes?

Thanks,

Mathieu Ouellette

Hi Mathieu,
No, Cuora zhoui locality data is still unverified by any biologist. Some folks have a pretty good idea and a general area where they are probably found. We are still looking though. Unfortunately, we may already be too late. I hope not, but it hasn't been seen in the trade in China for some time now. This is a species in desparate need of coordinated management efforts to ensure its survival. It is one of the top priority species for the TSA at this time. There are fewer than 50 founder individuals of this species known to exist worldwide.

Hi Cris,

Thanks for these informations. I'm glad C. zhoui is one of the top
priority of TSA. With so little specimens known I bet its suspected
distribution is pretty restricted? Is it in China, in Vietnam or in
both? Are there any field surveys conducted by TSA?

In fact, I'm amazed about how the distribution of some of the Cuora
species remains poorly known and that the number of specimens known is
very low (I'm thinking of C. yunnanensis, C. mccordi and C. zhoui for
instance). Do you think these species once had a wider distribution
and then were depleted by trade before they were noticed by scientists
or that they already had a relictual distribution in contemporary
times?

Thanks,

Mathieu

      Hello:
I agree with you.  I hope these boards lead to lots of archival material for reference on breeding turtles.

      Hello:
I think that maybe since so many of these animals come from the food and pet trade the dealers don't care where they come from.  many collectors are very local and don't spread out very far.  Therefore they collect the same areas and it is possible that a little farther out there could be lots of untouched populations.  Some good field research is needed.

Dear Mathieu, dear John,

We have quite a good hint from where zhoui is, but even if we know, this will never be made public. We do know from where mccordi is, as well as yunnanensis but due to the demand on these species we have to keep these areas very secret to protect what is left as long as we can. For zhoui field work will start very soon. All the mentioned species have a highly restricted and isolated distribution, maybe relics since the last ice age.
@ John: this is not the case in China, collectors are where rare turtles are, even in the most remote mountain valleys.
Mathieu: could you send a pdf of the french japonica paper? thanks

I would also be interested in the japonica paper.  Not sure what our size restrictions for attachments are here though?

Hi,

Unfortunately I don't have the pdf. I have only the hard-copy
magazine. I'll contact the author to ask him if he has a PDF copy.
I'll let you know as soon as possible.

Mathieu

PS: thank you Torsten for these informations on Cuora.
