Is anyone working with this species?

Yes, there are several people in the U.S. that keep this species and some have successfully bred them.

      Hello:
I'm planning on getting some juvies this year but it'll take 2-3 years before they do anything.  They really are neat turtles.  I love the wild mix of colors on the carapace.  I had a large male once for about twelve years before letting a friend of mine have him.
   Have a Great Day!!!

The Turtle Conservancy has a film about their time spent in the field with this species.

Cris:  Thanks for your info regarding japonica.  Would like to contact the people you mentioned to compare notes on breeding, rearing--etc.  Please advise.  Just a side-note--my wife and I drove to Palmdale, Fl  to visit a 1950's roadside attraction called Gatorama. I had  visited this attraction about 20 years ago and it was very much the same  today as back in the day.  A large colony of american crocs, two cubans and some niles and saltys. Best Wishes and congrats--Dr. B

       Hello:
Gatorama is still there???  Surely one of the last of a dying institution.

P.S.  Good luck with G. japonica.  They are fun turtles and grow fairly quick.  C-Ya!!!

Hi,

I have yet to buy a copy of that DVD. The following documentation is
also
of interest in my opinion for anyone interested by G. japonica.

Devaux, Bernard. 2006. Dans les forêts d'Okinawa. La Tortue 73:8-29
(a
field report written in French with nice in situ turtle and habitat
pictures with some discussion on ecology and conservation of G.
japonica
and other Japanese species)

Lee, David. 2004. Moral, ethical, and legal issues regarding
importation
of rare turtles under the guise of conservation: Geoemyda japonica -
a
case study. Turtle and Tortoise Newsletter 7:27-28 (very interesting
thoughts on possessing this protected species in captivity)

Schaefer, Ingo. 2005. Zacken-Erdschildkröten: Die Gattung Geoemyda.
Natur
un Tier - Verlag. 143 pages. (although I have yet to learn German,
this
book features a lot of nice pictures of G. japonica and its habitat,
and
seems to contain a lot of information about it from what I can read).

Yasukawa, Yuichirou, and Ota, Hidetoshi. 2008. Geoemyda japonica Fan
1931
- Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle, Okinawa black-breasted leaf
turtle.
In: Rhodin, A.G.J., Pritchard, P.C.H., van Dijk, P.P., Saumure, R.A.,
Buhlmann, K.A., and Iverson, J.B. (Eds.). Conservation Biology of
Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises: A Compilation Project of the IUCN/
SCC
Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group. Chelonian Research
Monographs No 5, pp.002.1-002.6. http://www.iucn-tftsg.org/wp-
content/uploads/file/Accounts/crm_5_002_japonica_v1_2008.pdf (a very
comprehensive account on the species with some pictures and a
distribution map).

Hope this will help,

Mathieu
