“When I learned about the Trusted CI Fellowship, I realized there was natural alignment and a way for me to deepen my understanding of cybersecurity for research." Meet Stephen Streng, Research Development Strategist at the University of Minnesota! As a mediator between IT and research teams, Stephen helps them achieve common goals, including meeting strict cybersecurity requirements. But with academic research being an open science environment, he knows that sharing and collaboration are key. Click here to apply for the program.     Trusted CI: Past Fellow Spotlight                                Better Prepared and Better Positioned     Stephen Streng, 2022 Trusted CI Fellow   As a Research Development Strategist with the Strategic Partnerships and Research Collaborative at the University of Minnesota, Stephen Streng often serves as a mediator, helping IT and research teams throughout the university understand and achieve their common goals, including meeting increasingly stringent cybersecurity needs and requirements in government proposals. “However, academic research is an open science environment; putting up any kind of walls, not sharing is an anathema,” says Streng. “So when I learned about the Trusted CI Fellowship, I realized there was natural alignment and a way for me to deepen my understanding of cybersecurity for research.” He became aware of the critical necessity of cybersecurity while in his previous position as a Food Defense Analyst at the University of Minnesota’s Food Protection and Defense Institute, where he conducted research and educated others about preventing intentional adulteration of the food supply. While there, he helped launch their efforts to combat cybersecurity threats, particularly to operational technology used in food production. Another cohort of fellows will receive training from and work closely with Trusted CI to expand their understanding of trustworthy science and further empower the NSF community to secure its research. In 2025, we will relaunch the Fellows program based on feedback from past Fellows to enhance the experience for all. Trusted CI, the NSF Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, is made up of cybersecurity experts who have spent decades working with science and engineering communities. They have an established track record of usable, high-quality solutions suited to the needs of those communities.
