Hi all

My school is a Microsoft School but want to get Google Classroom whilst still using OneDrive. Has anyone had any experience with this and if so how did it work out?

We're a Google college and just introduced OneDrive and Teams. At the moment the idea is that Google will be for student-facing and learning activities, and Microsoft for business/admin.  We'll see how that goes!   My concern is that we have Google Drive and OneDrive and no clear guidelines on what should be stored where.  Google docs etc integrate more smoothly with classroom than the MS versions, but it's easy to convert from one to the other. I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who has made this work.

Have been a 'hybrid' school since we introduced Google ten years ago. It is not easy. Microsoft side dominates the admin side, and those EDU staff unwilling to learn more Google tools or locked into products such as SMART Notebook. We do not use OneDrive though, and everything (including Word documents, etc) are saved in Google Drive and we use the Google Drive app (formally File Stream) for Windows devices. This does help somewhat. I believe there is going to be more OneDrive and ChromeOS integration.

I would always say that using the GW tools for the education side and Google Classroom is pretty much a must. For editing documents and creating assignments,  etc. But that is my opinion.

Hope that helps a little.

Yeah this is us! We're a local authority so all of our admin side is 365, and all the learner facing stuff is google. It can get really messy if you're not careful, but I found that just being clear about the separation helps, i.e. is this for a student? google. Is this for HR? microsoft.

Then the biggest sticking point is when you've got backlogs of worksheets etc that were all word and excel and you want to use them on docs and sheets. Conversion isn't impossible, just sometimes it goes a bit awry.

Hello,

There will also be lots of people to ask at BETT next week!

If not, as a consultancy and Google for Education partner etc. we'd happily support you in evaluating the impact/risks.

Mirroring the sentiments above, it is certainly possible, there are some best practices around SSO etc. and a few tricks but you will have to make some compromises somewhere.

I'd recommend trailing it, to get an ordered list of actions and then review in a month to help manage expectations.
