Hey crew,

A few updates to share:
  • Steering Committee: I created a doc here starting to lay out some current and potential roles for a NTLA steering committee. Please add, edit, and make comments!
  • Membership Guidelines: doc here starting to lay out some membership parameters.
  • Email Template: tangential to our alliance work, Josh and I were talking about how the Chicago Tool Library uses a Gmail template to help respond to inquiries from excited citizens curious about starting their own tool libraries. Including that template below in case it would help anyone else create their own email response.

Y'all are the best!
Tessa

Hi [NAME],

Here is a series of resources that we always share:

You can find a lot of details about the Chicago Tool Library's start-up in an interview that Tessa, one of our co-founders, did a little while back. One of the main takeaways from CTL's start-up process is that each tool library needs to assess the needs of their unique community in order to have a successful project. We always say that the best first step to starting a tool library is distributing a community survey to assess your local need and help outline basic parameters like membership pricing, location, tool inventory, etc.

Check out the International Tool Library Google Group, the International Facebook Group, and Sharestarter for lots of good information to dig through. With the Google group, be sure to search the archives before posting new topics because many questions have already been discussed in the forum.

Another amazing resource is the very recently launched Library of Things Co-lab run by Shareable. It is specifically geared towards new "libraries of things" and covers many of the essentials for getting started.  All of the meetings are hosted by tool library veterans from across the US and are recorded for future viewing.

Thanks Tessa, this is a fabulous start-- and ahead of deadline! I appreciate you laying out role definitions for me and I imagine others do too.

I'll chew on this a bit more and encourage others to make suggestions/comments.

Hey-

So on Oct 1st I will be on the Untangling Circularity podcast to talk about our "business model" amongst other things.
I would like to share the alliance email and I will highlight the shareable co-lab.
Anything I should/shouldn't include? I can probably direct my comments to the angle that we are in need of support for ... finance, governance, what else?

Hey, that's so cool! Please share the link when it's published!

I don't think there's anything to avoid sharing at the moment. Funding is a big need, as well as connecting with other libraries of things, whether they're "ready" to join the alliance or not. he...@toollibraryalliance.org is a good email to share, or you can direct them to www.toollibraryalliance.org (be sure to include the www).

Yay!
