Happy Labor Day!
The United Maryland Muslim Council would like to wish its readers a Happy and safe Labor Day.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to American workers' social and economic achievements. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to our country's strength, prosperity, and well-being.
Brief History: The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. In 1894, Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday after a failed attempt to break up a railroad strike. The Labor Day celebration's character has changed in recent years. The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.
