Assalamu Alaikum,
I am reaching out on behalf of the Laymoun family to share this growing effort across masajid and community organizations across the United States who are uniting in support of a critical cause: finding a stem cell match for a beloved and respected figurehead in the Northern California Muslim community who is currently battling Myelodysplastic syndrome, a blood cancer that impacts bone marrow and blood cells.
Given that Moaid Laymoun, or “Amo Moaid” is of Palestinian background, the most likely match will be an 18-40-year-old Arab person. Unfortunately, the existing stem cell donor registry of 50M members is 70% white, which makes it even more challenging to find a donor.
To support this effort, we encourage every minority ages 18-40 to sign up for the registry, including those of Arab background to potentially match with and save Amo Moaid’s life. Text “HOPE4ML” to 61474 to have a kit sent directly to you.
Additionally, we are encouraging masajid to host simple and non-invasive stem cell donor registration booths during Jumu'ah prayers or other well-attended community events. The process is safe, quick (just a cheek swab), and could be the key to saving a life.
These booths run in coordination with the national bone marrow registry, NMDP, and aim to increase the number of registered donors - especially from underrepresented communities like ours.
To connect with the family on steps, please reach out to Yousuf Laymoun (408) 516-6591. For frequently asked questions and to follow along with the effort on Instagram, visit @hope4_amomoaid.
Jazakum Allahu Khayran for your time and consideration.
