Dear friends,

The Platform does not seem to be working in the way we envisaged. We live in a very busy part of the world: Festivals, swaps, dances, choirs and every sort of creativity. The folk here live more in the here and now than any other place I know. It is a place in the moment.

People are concerned about the future, but fully occupied with the present. The Platform can go on having meetings, because that is in the present, and we can talk about the future as we can of the past.

But I have this deep feeling that moving from talk into effective action may not happen – we are all too busy.

We know we will have to act on the goals of The Platform, but the urgency is not there. Of course, I personally do not believe that, for everything indicates that the earth has moved far down the road in the last 18 months, and that what I presented at the U3A talk on Tomorrow’s World is steaming into our reality by the minute.

Nevertheless, it seems that we don’t look like being able to organise electric vehicles, or a parallel communications system, or preparations to avoid the rising seas, and all the rest. Most of us would like them, but getting them up and running?? Organising the Cobargo Festival with so many volunteers shows what we can do down here, but I admit that the impact of global warming over the next 5 or 6 years does not stir the same passion as coordinating the multitude of tasks needed for our passions in the moment.

I would like to keep aims of The Platform in our consciousness, and maybe this is what we should be concentrating on rather than trying to solve the problems that are coming from more people in an environment less and less able to support us. Each of us can support groups that are already involved with local food (SCPA and SAGE) and solar power (SHASA), but remember that the purpose of The Platform was the look at the whole societal change that is on the way. We should not lose sight of the impact the combination of changes is making on a complex society.

I put these thoughts with you to start a conversation.
