Reminder - Tomorrow.
Tomorrows World - 2 years later
Tuesday 27 November, Bermagui Community Centre, in the hall, 10-12.
Two
years ago U3A organised a seminar on Global Warming and the impact this
would have on the South Coast region. There has been a shocking
acceleration of heating in these two years. It has amazed scientists,
but completely bypassed politicians. The IPCC and a large panel of
scientists have given us less than a dozen years to get our act
together, which means reducing fossil fuel consumption to virtually
zilch. Otherwise, they warn that we will enter a "hothouse earth" in
which feedback loops will continue to heat the planet up to 5 or 6C, or
even more.
The political and commercial
likelihood of actually doing this in time, especially considering the
past 30 years of inaction and the fruitlessness of the Paris Accord etc,
is most probably also zilch. From this perspective, it is now urgent
that we prepare ourselves for the future that is coming. In this, I
believe, the South Coast has more advantages than almost any other place
on earth. The EcoPlatform Group has been formed down here to see how
best to do this.
The first part of the talk
addresses the dramatic change in the situation over the past 24 months.
The second considers the feasibility of survival, and the third on how
we on the South Coast may carry this out.
