pip3 fails to install futures, but futures isn't supposed to be used in python3?

I'm trying to install magenta on my MacBook M1 Max. It's failing because of futures, and the error is because futures isn't meant to be used with python3 apparently (plenty of discussion about that online). But then, why is magenta trying to use futures??
