TensorFlow Addons Newsletter: July2020

Hi all,

As mentioned, we'll be sending out a monthly newsletter describing the state of the repo, top relevant issues, and the road-map going forward. A big reason for this is to boost community input so please comment on the below information if you have any thoughts! 

Summary:

We've released a 0.10 version of Addons with support for python3.8, pinned to TF2.2, and have started testing against the new 2.3rc1. Several landmark issues have also been completed:

• GELU activation is approved and currently merging into TF core
• Deprecation warnings have been added for custom-op activations
• We've enabled distributed testing

Going forward we have plans to streamline our development containers and support GitHub codespaces.

User adoption has leveled off at a respectable ~5000 daily downloads. There are a lot of awesome new additions implemented in our PRs and we want to remind everyone that PR reviews are greatly appreciated and are vital to keeping our repository sustainable. Anyone is welcome to review and we encourage multiple reviews per PR.

Landmark Issues:

Below are some of the landmark issues that we're aiming to address in the coming month(s):

• Pull request templates to better describe to new contributors the best practices and procedures for working with our repository.
• OSS Usage Monitor to determine the most popular features of Addons.
• Finalize procedure for addons migrations

Maintainership:

As was originally mentioned in our sustainability RFC, we want to send out the status of our maintainership so submodules and subpackages can more readily be adopted. To become a maintainer with write-access on tensorflow/addons we ask that you sign up to support some submodules first then we can grant as defined on our landing page. If you would like to be a submodule maintainer please feel free to submit a PR adding yourself to the CODEOWNERS file.
