[Survey] How technical communicators find community and professional development

Hello all,

 

I'm Lance Cummings, a professor of professional writing at UNC Wilmington. I'm running a research study on how technical communicators find professional development and community now that the field's association landscape has changed so much, including the closure of STC in 2025.

 

I'm looking for input from practitioners at any career stage, whether you were an STC member, a subscriber to an industry platform like The Content Wrangler, both, or neither. The survey takes about 10 minutes and is anonymous.

This research is approved through UNC Wilmington's IRB (Protocol #H26-0921) and will inform an article proposed for a special issue of Communication Design Quarterly, along with presentations at SIGDOC and industry conferences. Findings will also be shared back with the community once the study is complete.

I feel like this is geared somewhat towards North American technical writers because the STC was primarily an American organization.

In Europe and Israel, for example, you have tekom.
