Dear FINOS Community,
We are excited to announce that Open Resource Broker (ORB) is now a FINOS project, bringing modern cloud-native scalability to IBM Spectrum Symphony grid environments. Developed in partnership between Morgan Stanley and Amazon Web Services, ORB is now donated to FINOS under the Apache 2.0 license, to make compute capacity management more portable, automated, and sustainable.
You can find the repository here: https://github.com/finos/open-resource-broker.
ORB solves a common challenge among infrastructure engineers: inconsistent, provider-specific APIs and duplicated integration logic. By providing a unified, open-source API and abstraction layer, ORB extends the IBM Spectrum Symphony HostFactory ecosystem with native Kubernetes and AWS integrations. This allows organizations to dynamically scale workloads using AWS or Kubernetes orchestration—enabling hybrid cloud bursting, elastic cluster scaling, and cost-optimized resource allocation.
With built-in support for modern APIs, purchasing options (such as Amazon EC2 Spot) and proven resiliency patterns (such as retries and idempotent operations), ORB makes it simple to balance performance requirements with infrastructure costs. While the initial implementation focuses on AWS and Kubernetes, its modular design supports CLI, REST, SDK, and MCP APIs, ensuring it is ready for extensibility across additional schedulers and cloud providers.
The most current release is v1.0.2, available for download at https://github.com/finos/open-resource-broker/releases/tag/1.0.2. Documentation is available at https://github.com/finos/open-resource-broker/blob/main/README.md and you can reach out to the project team at open-resou...@lists.finos.org.
Your feedback, issues, and contributions are more than welcome. See https://github.com/finos/open-resource-broker/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md for more information on how to contribute.
Thanks to the FINOS Community for a warm welcome!
