Marco Storni est historien des sciences, chercheur postdoctoral à l'ULB au sein du projetRENEW18 (Responses to Newton in 18th-Century Philosophy). Ses recherches se concentrent sur deux grands domaines. En tant qu’historien de la philosophie, il étudie les débats épistémologiques des Lumières françaises ainsi que les controverses du XVIIIᵉ siècle en philosophie naturelle, en particulier celles suscitées par la diffusion des théories newtoniennes en Europe. En tant qu’historien des pratiques scientifiques, il s’intéresse à la naissance de la culture expérimentale à l’époque moderne, à l’histoire des académies des sciences, ainsi qu’aux savoirs incorporés. Il a publié la monographie Maupertuis. Le philosophe, l’académicien, le polémiste (Honoré Champion, 2022) ainsi que de nombreux articles dans des revues internationales.

Après sa présentation, nous discuterons son texte sur les marges du savoir à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

“At the Margins of the Enlightenment: Challenging Scientific Authority in Late Eighteenth-Century France”

Marco Storni is a historian of science and a postdoctoral researcher at the Université libre de Bruxelles, where he is affiliated with the RENEW18 project (Responses to Newton in 18th-Century Philosophy). His research focuses on two main areas. As a historian of philosophy, he studies the epistemological debates of the French Enlightenment and eighteenth-century controversies in natural philosophy, particularly those sparked by the diffusion of Newtonian theories in Europe. As a historian of scientific practice, he is interested in the emergence of experimental culture in the early modern period, the history of scientific academies, and and the knowledge embedded in object construction and use. He has published the monograph Maupertuis. Le philosophe, l’académicien, le polémiste (Honoré Champion, 2022), as well as numerous articles in international journals.

Following his presentation, we will discuss his text on the margins of knowledge at the end of the eighteenth century.
