Dear Prof. Steinke, dear Felix

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to you in my capacity as Scientific Editor of the VSH-AEU Bulletin, a publication of the Swiss Association of Higher Education (VSH-AEU). As you certainly know, the Bulletin appears in open access and print, and is supported by the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAGW). It is widely distributed among academics, university leadership, libraries, and education policy stakeholders throughout Switzerland.

The forthcoming issue will deal with theme “Trust in Science”, an extremely important topic which has not only scientific but also political and societal ramifications.

So far, I've had positive responses from contributors from science/medicine, a
brief essay reflecting on the ongoing erosion of that trust, digital health science, cognitive science and neuroscience, climate change, theology and palaeonthology, as well as maybe in health law.

While brainstorming about historical phenomena of mistrust in science, I came accross the early 20th-century skepticism towards science in Switzerland. As the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Science (SSHMS), founded in 1921, has been instrumental in promoting research on the historical development of science and medicine in Switzerland, I thought a publication addressing themes related to public trust in scientific endeavors would be great.

May I ask you if you were interested in writing a contribution on a topic of your choice? If so, could you specify a working title, a very short abstract (2-3 sentences) and the length of your contribution?

The initial plan was to finalise the bulletin by the end of June and print and send it out in mid-July (guidelines in the attachment). However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet this deadline.  I will have to consider adjusting this deadline and possibly setting it back by a month, meaning a deadline by 20 July 2025.

I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible. Do not hesitate to contact me by phone.

Kind regards,
Franziska Schumacher
