Hello Roguish Individuals,

I recently used the attached worksheet to help my English II students examine some basic rhetorical devices. The worksheet asks them to examine Ezra's speech from the Rebels episode "Call to Action."

Students are first asked to create a SOAPSTone chart for the speech, then they are asked to identify examples of ethos, pathos, logos, and other rhetorical devices; and finally, they complete a quick write asking them to examine whether they would find the speech persuasive if they were living on Lothal. For the quick write, I made sure to be careful to remind them that standing up to the Empire could carry with it some really horrible punishments, so they need to carefully explain why they would be persuaded to stand against the Imperials or not.

Reactions in my class were pretty positive. I can imagine that it would have only been more so if I would have been able to show the clip from the episode. As it was, I had a student who is currently failing and never participates answer a question today, so I'll count that as a win.

Hopefully, this lesson is helpful to some of you, and may the force be with you in this last run to the end of the year!
