Are you using Science United?
It will try different projects until it finds ones that have work for your PC.

I have a desktop PC with AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3.8 GHZ up to 4.7 GHZ and
Geforce RTX 4070 graphics card. I am getting jobs here an there from
projects like srbase, primegrid, einstein@home, etc except for like
Denis@home, Sidock@home, climateprediction.net and so on. Not sure what is
going with those projects as I have fiber optic internet connection too.
Have checked some projects I added in client and they say those servers are
up and running so I do not know why work units are not coming down. I have
BOINC 8.0.4 Windows 11 pro and I do not use science united account manager
anymore.

Hi,

I am aware that yoyo@home ECM P2 tasks do not have checkpoints. I noticed in my program data folder in the Boinc slot directory folder there is one file called checkpoint and a text document called checkpoint. Seems to be updating regularly was last updated at 5:20 48 minutes ago. Text file displays 0 66725.734375. Is there a particular reason why Boinc is not making use of the checkpoint file? I am working on a XY task.

I am using Windows 11 professional latest stable release and Boinc 8.0.2

Thanks

Jarod

Hi,

To my understanding, the checkpoint file you described is only for showing statistics in BOINC Manager, with the first value the percentage and the second the time taken. This file is generated by the wrapper, not the ECM application itself. To my knowledge, ECM does not have checkpoint functionality, at least not in Stage 2 which is computationally much heavier, probably due to the nature of the algorithm.

All the best,
Wenjie Fang

A BOINC job that uses the wrapper can consist of several 'tasks';
these are described in an XML file, 'job.xml'.

The wrapper uses its own checkpoint file, 'wrapper_checkpoint.txt',
to keep track of which tasks have already been finished
(so that it doesn't re-do them).

In addition, each task can optionally checkpoint.
If so, it should touch a 'task checkpoint' file
(whose name is specified in job.xml).
The wrapper periodically checks the mod time of this file to see if a
checkpoint has been done.
The file doesn't contain the actual checkpoint data; typically it's empty.

I don't know if yoyo@home uses this mechanism.

Thank you for both your responses.

To my pleasant surprise when I turned my computer on this morning the task picked up from a checkpoint the checkpoint.txt file now says 0 75207.359375 can I use checkpoint.txt output as an indication how far task is completed?

Thanks
Jarod

Hello Jarod,

ECM doesn't have checkpoints.
In yoyo@home are 3 kind auf ecm workunits:
1) normal ecm workunits
2) P1 ecm workunits. The are named *_P1_* at the end
3) P2 ecm workunits, using the ecmP2 app.

All are wrapper apps.
But only 1) consists of 5 tasks (see job.xml in slot directory). So if a task has finished, the wrapper remembers it in
it's wrapper checkpoint file. In case of a restart, those finished tasks are not executed again.

Thanks Yoyo the confirmation.

I guess I got lucky somehow. According to the task properties in Boinc manager it says the following

CPU time
21:54:08
CPU time since checkpoint
03:22:02
Elapsed time
06:45:18
Estimated time remaining
16:39:31
Fraction done
25.466%
Progress rate
3.600% per hour

PC was down overnight, task has been running for about 3 hours today so I cannot explain how it has completed over 25% without using a checkpoint.

If ecm_xy_1736011541_C213_147_128_23_P2 doesn't complete within roughly the next 11.75 hours I will have to abort I think unless I see the "time since checkpoint" decrease and obviously is "CPU time" increase.
