>>> BOINC Install System has been made STUPID. <<<

My  USB (thumb drive) holding BOINC, storage, work units - failed.

BOINC >refuses< (and does not even bother to ask) to install on any other Windows drive letter.

If you want work units from me - and I really do want to donate them to you - then somebody has to get BOINC install to go un-STUPID. Don't bother to trouble 'the pretty little head' of BOINC (Anderson) - he didn't  "get it". (And wading thru gigabytes of forum chatter: No.)

Buying a new USB just to fill the drive letter slot that BOINC install requiries- is not in my budget. I'm already playing 'put and take' with my food budget.

I have scheduled a retry later this month. Yes, I did see the 'help' link. I do not have any patience left for you to fool with it today.

Meanwhile, you'll just have to rely on others to 'Compute against COVID'. And compute for all the other projects that interest me: Citizen Science Grid, Roseta, AFIB (which for which I take an Rx drug) and similar.

>Important: This is the first time in Eighteen Years that being 'off of' BOINC has not bothered me.<

Instead of wasting time replying - > Just. Fix. Install. <

Advice: Do not tick off volunteers. Before you can -un-tick us, we are involved with doing something else.

Dear AlanG7Mc:
Greetings from Science United. Your computers haven't reported work in the last 30 days. Please check that the latest version of BOINC is installed, unsuspended, and attached to Science United. Get help here.

Thanks for participating in Science United.

Hello Alan,

I believe you didn't try to press Advanced button and change installation folder.

And by the way, the installer behavior was not changed for a long time. And there never were any complains about inability to install BOINC to the custom location.

Fixing this requires a registry hack - specifically in

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup]

"INSTALLDIR"="D:\\BOINC\\"

"DATADIR"="D:\\BOINCdata\\"

change the drive letter to one that's valid on your system.

It shouldn't, but it does.

And if that doesn't want to work for the same reason that Windows (!!) expects the installation path to be from the thumbdrive, then you can edit the installation path in the Windows registry (regedit.exe):

In Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup change INSTALLDIR from the directory it's pointing at (your thumbdrive) to something else you can reach. Exit regedit after the change and you can immediately use the installer again.
