This is a good introduction to options for house/generator transfer systems.
It’s provided by PG&E free for areas that are in high fire danger, but it is interesting to all of us.

Region 2 EmComm teams: For a limited time, PG&E is giving free transfer meters to homeowners in Tier 2 and 3 fire hazard areas. A transfer meter switches power from the grid to a compatible generator, and installs at the power panel, allowing the generator to reside safely outdoors while powering circuits inside the home.
