Telecom Italia Dataset for telecommunications

Hi. I am an Msc student of telecom engineering and I am working in the area of machine learning and it possible use in this area. I have recently come across this data set provided by the TIM. Before I dive into the problem I wanted to clarify a few things:

1. Are the internet activity an indication of the number of connections that were made within that square grid or are they actual amount of data exchanged within that time slot?

2. Each square grid has an area of 0.235 x 0.235 m. Does the square grids overlap with each other or are the totally independent? Also since there are 10000 points, without overlapping takes the overall area to 552 squared km which is way too big.

I really hope someone could clarify these inquiries for me.

Hi Paul,

1. data contained in this dataset https://dandelion.eu/datagems/SpazioDati/telecom-sms-call-internet-mi/description/, represents the overall activity (sms, call and internet) of an area of the city for a certain period of time. That number is computed by aggregating all CDR of all users that were using the network in that area at that time, and it is just a relative value that can be used only by comparing it with the other levels of activity of the other cells. In other words, given that data you cannot infer any interaction for single users, but can analyse the variability of the volume of the traffic with respect to time and space.
