Technical Support,
The UCSC genome browser has been very slow for several weeks beginning sometime before Thanksgiving. This is not just on my computer but also on others, including the supervisor’s and director’s computers. Other websites seem to come up quickly, so I think our internet here at the lab is okay. I appreciate any help you can give us.
Thank you,
Mary Alice
Dear Mary,
Thank you for using the UCSC Genome Browser and informing us about your browser experience.
Could you send us a link off the gen...@soe.ucsc.edu mailing list, either directly to me or to our privategenom...@soe.ucsc.edu list with more details about what you are browsing?
What would be of benefit is to create a session of the data you are viewing and to send a link to us. You can create a Session by going up to the "MyData" menu bar and selecting "Sessions" where you can sign-in and then scroll down to the "Save Settings" section and then click "submit" and then "Email" and enter either my address or genom...@soe.ucsc.edu.
For more information about sessions you can see this User Guide page and this recent blog post:
http://genome.ucsc.edu/goldenPath/help/hgSessionHelp.html
http://genome.ucsc.edu/blog/how-to-share-your-ucsc-screenthoughts/ "Share a stable dynamic Session."
Thank you again for your inquiry and using the UCSC Genome Browser. If your response includes sensitive data, you may send it instead to genom...@soe.ucsc.edu. Replies to gen...@soe.ucsc.edu are archived on a publicly-accessible forum.
All the best,
Brian Lee

Brian,
http://genome.ucsc.edu/cgi-bin/hgTracks?db=hg19&position=chr7%3A16917864-17422044&hgsid=426789421_uQsyg9Sm53Q69jAu2TZTYBtti1kS This is a link to just one set of coordinates I’ve accessed on the browser. I have the browser bookmarked on my computer and even bringing that up is a slow process. When I check for gene information or primer information from our user track, it takes a long time to get there and a long time to get back to the graph.
Thank you,
Mary Alice
Dear Mary,
Thank you for using the UCSC Genome Browser and for reporting your experience around browser speed.
From the shared session information there is not an immediate explanation for the difference you are experiencing, can you confirm that previous to November these same regions would display faster? Or if you can provide any further details, that might be helpful as well.
One suggestion from our engineers is to limit the number of tracks selected, as when numerous tracks are displayed it requires many queries to be performed, but that likely would have slowed the browser before November as well. Another alternative might be to see if you experience any difference in performance when trying similar operations at our European mirror, http://genome-euro.ucsc.edu/, which was created to increase the speed for European users, however, it can sometimes benefit East Coast users as well since our machines are located in California.
Thank you again for your inquiry and using the UCSC Genome Browser. If you have any further questions, please reply to gen...@soe.ucsc.edu. All messages sent to that address are archived on a publicly-accessible forum. If your question includes sensitive data, you may send it instead to genom...@soe.ucsc.edu.
All the best,
