Hi,

I use the method below to download mm10 genome:

mm10.bit downloaded on Jan-28-2019 from UCSC Genome Browser using Rsync
rsync -a -P rsync://hgdownload.cse.ucsc.edu/goldenPath/mm10/bigZips/mm10.2bit ./

My friend use the line below to download mm10 genome:

Are they the same? What's the difference between .cse and .soe?

Many thanks

Best,

Gary

Dear Gary,

Thank you for using the UCSC Genome Browser and your question about the .cse. and .soe. domains. These two addresses and the data at each are equivalent (whether accessed by http or rysnc). You can use either the .cse. or .soe. address with your rsync command:

 rsync -a -P rsync://hgdownload.soe.ucsc.edu/goldenPath/mm10/bigZips/
 rsync -a -P rsync://hgdownload.cse.ucsc.edu/goldenPath/mm10/bigZips/
To explain the history, our group was once under the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department and then moved to be under the School of Engineering (SOE). In our documentation, we try to point only to the .soe. domain. As a side note, we are now officially the Genomics Institute (GI) at UCSC, but we do not plan at this moment to make the .gi. change.

Thank you again for your inquiry and using the UCSC Genome Browser. If you have any further public questions, please reply to gen...@soe.ucsc.edu. All messages sent to that address are archived on a publicly-accessible forum. If your question includes sensitive data, you may send it instead to genom...@soe.ucsc.edu.

All the best,

Brian Lee
