Good afternoon, UCSC Genome Team. It’s a pleasure to meet everyone, albeit digitally.

I’m D’Andrew Harrington, a keen user of the UCSC genome browser, and I am visually impaired. Are there any settings available in the UCSC genome browser, aside from the configuration panel, that individuals with visual impairments or other disabilities can utilize?

I looked through the UCSC Genome Browser documentation but couldn’t find any relevant information.

Specifically, I would be looking for things like:

  1. Inverted colors.          (Color blindness settings)
  2. Visual Snow                 (Static settings for VSS)
  3. Font additions             (Comic Sans for dyslexia)

Thank you very much for your time.

Drew

Hi, Drew.

We have a meeting with GEP next week, set up by Laura Reed, to discuss a few topics including this one. I imagine your question timing is not a coincidence, but I figured I would mention it on the unlikely chance.

We appreciate you providing specific items we could work on, and will gladly take any further feedback. I'll comment specifically on each:

Inverted colors. (Color blindness settings)

We are unsure if our implementation would be better than specific OS software for this, but if you could share other tools that invert the colors in this way, we would be interested in seeing them.

Visual Snow (Static settings for VSS)

We are not sure what this would look like. Could you share examples?

Font additions (Comic Sans for dyslexia)

We support additional fonts under the Configure menu and other potentially useful settings, such as tooltip and font sizes.

In addition to the fonts we offer, do you have any suggestions that would be helpful for users in addition to Comic Sans?

Hello Luis,

Thank you so much for reaching out!

I connected with the other members of the GEP team who will be meeting with you next week.

To make sure no wires get crossed, I’ve brought up the content directly with Laura and Wilson to make sure everything remains in scope and is covered, too.

I hope you have a great day!

Drew

You don't often get email from lrna...@ucsc.edu. Learn why this is important
