Dear Genome Browser in a Box (GBiB) Users,

In the coming week a collection of GBiB enhancements are set to download the next time existing GBiBs update, these updates are already integrated into the current GBiB available at https://genome-store.ucsc.edu/.

This upcoming update may take some time as it will download almost 500MB from the Ubuntu repository to allow future auto-installation of security-critical Ubuntu updates, and the ability to install software such as the the R Base Package to enable running R script.

There are also a few GBiB user interface enhancements that will be included after the update along with the Ubuntu changes:
  • There will be a new GBiB entry in the Help menu
  • There will be a new GBiB Shared Data Folder in the My Data menu
    • This will allow a quick navigation to files shared locally that can be entered as URLs in the Custom Tracks or Track Hubs tools.
    • For example, one can paste the following to load a local file called file.bigBed in Custom Tracks: http://127.0.0.1:1234/folders/file.bigBed
  • The GBiB Custom Track tool will also be able to load local files by pointing to the /folders directory with the bigDataUrl parameter.
    • For example, one will be able to paste the following to load a local file called file.bigBed in Custom Tracks: track name=myData description="My experiment data" type=bigBed color=255,0,0 bigDataUrl=/folders/file.bigBed

Happy Genome Browsing in a Box!
