Dear UCSC Genome Browser Team,

I have built an UCSC local mirror. Everything seems well but an error message with "hgTracks object is missing from the response" will be displayed in the page when I click some buttons that I have marked the red box in the figure below.  These buttons seem to be invalid but I did not know why. I appreciate if you can help me to solve this problemThe URL of our website is http://animal.nwsuaf.edu.cn/genomebrowser/cgi-bin/hgTracks?db=Goat.

Thank you very much for your time.

Kind regards,
Weiwei fu

Hello Weiwei,

Thank you for your question about the mysterious broken buttons. Unfortunately we cannot tell what is causing this issue for your mirror based off of the information you provided. Perhaps your web server logs will have more information. Please watch your server logs as your click a broken button and see if there are any relevant lines in your log file.

We are also curious if perhaps you have been editing the source code and maybe your editor has somehow replaced plain ASCII spaces with Unicode Spaces or some other whitespace character, since the only buttons with problems are those with a space in the value?

Please let us know what investigating the server logs reveals, and if you have any further questions!

Thank you again for your inquiry and using the UCSC Genome Browser. If
you have any further questions, please reply to gen...@soe.ucsc.edu.
All messages sent to that address are archived on a
publicly-accessible forum. If your question includes sensitive data,
you may send it instead to genom...@soe.ucsc.edu.

Dear Christopher Lee,

I found the reason for this error because I set redirection in file .htaccess. This file filters out some dangerous characters (especially for "<") of URL. It does work when I remove the line "RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} %3C [NC,OR] and RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} %20 [OR]" of ".htaccess". However, the source code is not to filter these dangerous characters. So if possible and convenient for you, can you give me part of the security configuration to me. I know this excessive demand may exceed your service range but I still want to try. Thank you for replying so promptly.

All the best
Weiwei fu

Hello Weiwei,

Thank you again for reporting this issue. We currently have a task in our work queue to fix
URLs with encoded characters. For now, it sounds like you were able to implement a workaround
to get your mirror to work.

Regarding the details of our security configuration that you have inquired about, here is a documentation
link for the content security policy (CSP) upgrades that our engineers have recently implemented in the
genome browser to protect it from bot attacks.

If you have further questions, please feel free to respond to this list!
