Dear SMART Community

We have a few questions about export tracks:

We need to export tracks from SMART but not like shape file. For us, It is neccesary to export track in gpx format. It is possible?

We do not have the track files of GPS.  We receive only SMART files, wich include tracks and waypoints.

If it is not possible. Particulary, we need information about altitude for each point of track.

It is possible that SMART show information about altitude in the view trackpoint and then export that in a chart?

Best

Hi Jorge,

You can not currently export a track from SMART in gpx format.

However, it has been requested as a new ‘high priority’ feature for development so I’d be hopeful it would be included as a new feature in the next contract.

There may be a workaround you can do now by exporting GPS points as csv files created from queries and then converting to GPX using free web software (e.g. http://www.gpsvisualizer.com). But I’m not sure how you would get tracks out (only waypoints).

Perhaps someone else has a workaround?

For altitude, that is new and not something that has been requested. Can you write to me separately with a bit more information about what you might need?

Thanks,
Emma

Hey guys!

This should be a very easy issue to resolve with some quick programming.  Both GPX files and SMART's exported patrols are xml files, which is a pretty simple format for storing data as its just plain text, so they can be read and modified by any text editor.

I can't think of any free workarounds at the moment, but its relatively easy to program a excel macro (using VBA) that is capable of automatically converting SMART patrols to complete GPX files with both waypoints and trackpoints.  I've done similar things before, and I really think this should only take a day for a programmer to implement, maybe 2 days for an amateur programmer or a database technician.

When is the timeline for the next SMART release?  If its a highly requested feature, and there's a considerable wait time for the next release which will address this issue, I might be able to put some time into this 2 weeks from now to give a temporary workaround in the form of an excel file with a button that allows you to select a folder containing exported SMART patrols, and automatically converts all the files in the selected folder to their respective GPX formats.

James

The next release is planned for early 2016, although as Emma mentions this ticket is not in the current contract (it is high priority for the next).

Best Regards

Hi...I am not sure if you found a way out - if not - then you can try this.

First: If you succeed in exporting your track data from SMART to .shp  - FINE.

A)
- Download and install DNR GPS free from http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/DNRGPS/DNRGPS.html
- on DNR, File - load from - load your .shp file (track) - Yes completed (track tab is active)? - See your track points displayed
- Go to Edit menu - Convert table to waypoints - Yes completed (Waypoint tab is active) - See your waypoints displayed
- Go to File menu - Save to File [notice ESRI Shapefile (2D) is active] - Give name -  Your points are now a shapefile
- You can open .shp file on ArcGIS or any other .shp compartible software to visualise the pts.

B)
- With ArcGIS version 10 or Xtools AND the Digital Elevation Model for your area, you can extract the Elevation values to the points.  Here - You might want to conscious about projections.

Hope this helps.

Lawrence.

Hi Jorge,

Adding on to Lawrence's suggestion to use DNRGPS, if you'd like to save your tracks as GPX format, you could:

1. Load your exported tracks.shp on DNRGPS
2. Save to File... and select format as .gpx instead.

Important to note that for me, this only worked when I used the WGS84 projection. It was unsuccessful when I used our local Malaysian projection.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Wai Yee
