Dear Colleagues

A brief heads up on where we are with the SMART 7.5 version.  We really excited that the SMART 7.5 release candidate will be delivered to the partnership in mid-March.  It's too early to say when we will have the managed and public releases - each testing cycle takes around a month, and 3 testing cycles would not be unusual.  More details will follow on what's included in 7.5 but some of the highlights include reporting for custom patrol attributes, improvements in the UI to remove those long decimals numbers, and some initial improvements in the data queue for Connect.

Work on SMART 8 is already underway, and with the increased demand for Connect, the initial effort is focusing on enhancements to the data queue.

One item many of us are keen to include in SMART 8 is support for capturing lines and polygons in SMART.

We are keen for the community to comment on our internal discussion document on polygon support.  You won't be able to edit the document, but you should be able to add comments.

As SMART grows, we are keen to increase the number of people contributing to how we develop the tool, so please consider review the above document and sharing your thoughts/comments.

Best regards,

Jonathan

This sounds very promising, can't wait to see SMART 7.5 public release.
I am just wondering if  it's possible to incorporate drones in SMART.

When did we even have SMART 7 released to the public? I am still using V6.3 smart Mobile 320. My connection is still the same v6.3 who to contact for the upgrade please advise.
Thanks
Enock

Hi Enock,

No, SMART 7 has not yet officially been released. SMART 7.5, referenced here, is the version that is intended for release after the aforementioned testing.

There will be an update on the forum regarding the managed and public release.

Cheers,

Alex

We have a tool called Integrate the allows us to incorporate sensor data into the SMART and other platforms like Earth Ranger.  If the data is being manually reviewed, you also have the option of creating a SMART Collect form where the reviewer posts incidents into SMART.

How do you imagine using the drone data?  How will this be processed/reviewed before adding to SMART?  Is the review process manual or automated?

Thanks alot Palmer, I have always wondered how do I incorporate drones which are at our disposal into SMART and this sounds extremely great. I hope the technical manual for SMART 7.5 shall have steps for configurations of drones.

Regards to you all.

Shaibu.

This is very useful feedback.  If the area of the polygon was automatically recorded as an attribute of the polygon (so that you could run queries, with filters as needed, to calculate sums of areas etc) would that meet you need?

Any other needs or suggestions?

Thanks

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

This is something that is very useful for us as SMART users. To explain to you a bit what we need is to be able to give a map of a deforested or burned area from the patrol data so that we can give an estimate of its surface and its importance. At the end of the year for example, we need to be able to plot on a map of the CA all reported polygons, and give a total surface for them.

When reading the document that you have shared, I do not find anything to add, edit or remove.

Best wishes,

Angelo

Hi Jonathan,
For your first question: yes, that is exactly what we need. To explain it a bit more, let's say the patrollers can walk on the edge of the burned or deforested area then we should get a track that can be converted into a polygon (or they are recording a series of GPS coordinates as observations related to one observation like a burned or deforested area). It will be very useful if SMART can recognize it and with a kind of an extension, there is a way to calculate its surface, that is already a big achievement, and we do not need to work on ArcGIS or QGIS to estimate the surface of the area anymore.
Another suggestion (or probably a question) is if we can import in one time a series of coordinates of alerts (like  GLAD or fire alerts) as a table with dates and X & Y coordinates into SMART (it can be considered as intelligence and can be entered one by one but a bit time consuming).and then later patrollers/rangers can confirm that some of these alerts are real and some are fake, and if we can see later in the report map how many of these alerts were confirmed.
The last question is about a way to present observation data into a map, is it possible to show different types of threat observations or species observations differently on the map? As an example, let's say that we have 3 species as a conservation target in one conservation area. For a reporting period, our rangers have observed 2 of these species (or all 3 of them) in different locations. In one report map, I would like to show all these locations with 2 or three types of points (colored differently and only in one map), is that possible? I was not able to differentiate them yet with SMART 6.3.0.
Best wishes,
Angelo
