I really enjoy riding out in this area. It's fairly close to town but feels super remote and even a little spooky! We'll start by climbing Saltzman up to Skyline, dropping down through Helvetia, and then top off our bottle in North Plains at the 24 mile mark. From here we head out Dairy Creek Rd. and up into the woods for some legit backcountry gravel roads. Expect mud, standing water, all types of gravel, and some amazing views! We return to Portland via Skyline.
NOTE. This route cuts through a small portion of Weyerhaeuser property that is signed as "open to non-motorized recreation permit holders." Lots of people ride out here without a permit, but just be aware you're technically supposed to have a recreation permit for a portion of the route. Ride this route based on your comfort level with stuff like this.
Conversational pace, pre-season training camp vibes.
