I remember when it was called the Table of Doom.

In an effort to clean up the space and get rid of literal garbage, useless junk, clutter, and other items of questionable value that have been collecting dust, I'm proposing/implementing this system. Details below. image.png
How it works;

 Found an item that is no longer of use to the space?
 Something collecting dust, broken, redundant, or otherwise of questionable use?
 Put it in the purge pile!

 Step 1. Label the item with today's date
 Step 2. Post a photo of the offending item in the discord (#purge-pile) and discuss mailing list indicating intention to purge
 Step 3. Put it in the purge pile!
 Step 4. Discard the item after ______ (currently 14) days in the purge pile

FAQ;

What if I see an item in the purge pile that I don't think should be disposed of?
Simply remove it from the pile and reply to the original discord or discuss post with a reason why. Communication is key :)

What happens to items in the purge pile after ____ days?
In theory, any member is welcome to take the item or dispose of it. If you put something in the pile and see it still in the pile after ____ days, please take responsibility for finding a new home for the item.

How do we prevent items owned by members from being thrown out
The simple answer is don't store things that aren't be actively used at the space inside the space.
SkullSpace has several member storage areas, including private lockers for rent, a member storage cabinet at the back, and a new "active project storage" shelf behind the pegboards. Items that belong to members should be labelled and in active use. Otherwise it's important to keep in mind SkullSpace is not a storage depot, as such there shouldn't be an expectation that personal belongings can be stored here.

But what if X might be useful one day?
The reality is as makers we can often justify keeping almost any material. But as a shared space with limited capacity it's important we are mindful of the space items take up, potential stagnation, and room for fresh new projects. By regularly removing items from the space, we encourage fresh new projects, ideas, and collaboration while making the space more usable in general.

Questions, comments, concerns, want to fight me? Let's talk!

The table of doom lives on in our hearts and memories and in spirit. Long live the table of doom... in the form of the actual table slated to be doom'd! There is one there right now, a rolling metal desk.

See the photo album below which shows the improvements to the space and most of the stuff that we're going to doomify. Not included in the album is the fact that we reorg'd the lounge the Wednesday before our Nuit Blanche event which has greatly improved the space IMO.

I will update this email thread with another photo album of items to-be-doom'd

Hey All!

I just wanna make it abundantly clear that I do have a fairly sizable piece of walnut hardwood located in between a shelving unit which is located I believe closer to the kitchen. I just wanna make sure that that isn’t actually purged at all in any way shape orfrom, haha. This was my project to dive into getting to know our CNC a bit more personally as well as have the opportunity to manufacture myself a good old piece of euro rack furniture.. Thank you very much! Of course if there are any questions or anything don’t hesitate to get a hold of me cause I’ll be more than happy to answer any questions. Thx

Cheers!!

Having something tucked away is fine, but do make sure your name is on it! That way we can at least ask about it if it starts getting in the way. Otherwise we might come to the conclusion that it's some old SkullSpace material and the board could make a choice about it.

On that note, we shouldn't forget Mark J's Too Cool For SkullSpace [1] list, which contains items that are held at home but which can be requested by members. This keeps the space uncluttered, but makes tools available for that once-in-ten-years moment.

I stopped by the space tonight and had a look at the pile. I would like to suggest we keep the metal table with wheels for now and put the laser cutter on it. That way we can wheel the laser cutter over to the windows that open in the multipurpose room for ventilation and use it and wheel back into the corner when we are done. At least until we figure out a more permanent solution for ventilation.

Has someone reached out to Colin about the computer with his name on it? I’ll bump Sean about his gear.

Also, if I get the NetBright signs showing something useful, could we mount them somewhere? That’s been a back burner project for me for ages.

+1 for roller laser

Edwin

I am down to help you build one of the signs into a little stage display! It could be cool for events to show DJ name/other event info?

Yes, I made Colin S aware of their server.

I think I'm on team roller-laser.

For the roller laser, the laser is to big for those tables but nothing some spare plywood we have laying around can't fix, maybe that's something we can do today
