Remembering Our Sketchiest Product

Munchkin Sketch Edition

I just realized that February is the 10th anniversary of one of the mundanely quirkier items we've offered at Steve Jackson Games: Munchkin Sketch Edition.

For those who aren't familiar, the Sketch Edition is mechanically all the cards from the beloved core Munchkin experience (First Edition, of course – the Second Edition was nearly a decade away, conceptually). However, all the cards were blank, without any art. This opens up the possibilities to . . . well, just about anything you can imagine doing with a blank card.

For my purposes, this set came about a decade later than I would've liked it, because one of the most-fun use cases is what it suggests on the box itself: getting sketches from artists at conventions. I've never done it, since I stopped doing much convention stuff once I became a parent and the idea of an amazing four-day weekend experience was "SLEEP, MAYBE?" written shaky-handed on a whiteboard.

I still loved the idea of it, and I kind of wish it'd catch on. There are lots of games from other companies that I'd love getting to tinker with, as far as customization. If I could ever swing (say) some neat personalized artwork on some 7 Wonders cards, I'd be the favorite son-in-law at the next Christmas gathering.

Anyway, I assure you, this isn't a secret hint at future plans or anything like that. (I'm too busy with Fighting Fantasy and GURPS to chat with the cool Munchkin folks at the company.) I just stumbled across its anniversary and fondly remembered the limitless possibilities of getting to draw a blank.
