Participants needed: Household electrification adoption Study (30-min Interview)

Hello everyone,

My name is Victor Xue, and I am a PhD student at Indiana University’s O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. I am currently conducting an IRB-approved research study (IRB #28922) on household electrification and clean energy technology adoption.

I am seeking homeowners in the Bloomington area who have adopted three or more electrified or energy-efficient technologies, with at least one high-impact electrification system. The goal of this study is to understand how these technologies are adopted over time, specifically, the order in which households adopt them and the motivations and considerations at each adoption decision.

High-impact technologies (at least one required):

• Rooftop solar panels

• Heat pump for space heating and/or cooling

• Electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV)

• Home battery storage system

• Electric or heat-pump water heater

Additional eligible technologies include:

• Home EV charging system

• Electric stove or induction cooktop

• Smart thermostat (e.g., Nest, Ecobee)

• High-efficiency dishwasher

• Dehumidifier

• Electric yard equipment (e.g., mower, trimmer)

Participation involves a one-on-one Zoom interview lasting no more than 30 minutes. No preparation is required. I’m interested in your personal adoption journey, including what prompted each decision, what made it easier or harder, and how earlier choices shaped later ones. As a thank-you for your time, participants will receive a $30 Visa gift card.

As an early adopter of renewable energy since 2011, I have noticed that early adopters have a necessary role in acceptance of new technologies.

For example, solar owners are likely to drive electric vehicles, use cold climate heat pumps (ducted style or ductless mini splits), and are more aware of the effects of energy conservation such as insulation and seasonal thermostat settings. The differences can be substantial.  

In comparison, my 1960s vintage 3000 sq ft home with a gas furnace used 15 kWh daily from the grid in January while my neighbor with an electric furnace and water heater used more than 120 kWh daily.

Cold climate heat pumps and heat pump water heaters are very energy efficient and are becoming more affordable with government grants and utility company rebates.

Beware of electric resistance heat furnaces, electric resistance water heaters and warm climate heat pumps.
